Hive Carbon’s BioChar & Activated Carbon
Hive Carbon is part of the wider Hive Energy Group, based in South Africa. The team is part of our circular economy investment, supporting our mission for a greener future.
Hive Carbon operates patented reactors to produce premium grade biochar (>85% carbon) for the agricultural markets and activated carbon (>800 mg/g Iodine number) for the water and mine treatment markets. The team uses alien invasive black wattle species to produce the two products, sequestering the carbon in the wattle and putting the carbon back in the soil via biochar.
Along with the agronomic advantages of biochar applied to soil, our Carbon Back® biochar also reduces carbon emissions and mitigates climate change. Both products are carbon negative and attract carbon emission savings and qualify for carbon credit trading platforms.
The process of producing and exporting the products

Another load of black wattle comes in for processing through the Mobile Biochar Unit.

After the carbonisation process the biochar is QA tested, stored, and milled according to client requirements. These are the various grades of BioChar after milling.

We are busy measuring improved water holding capacity and infiltration rates in various soil types as well as reduced mineral leaching when using different rates of biochar.

Another bulk bag load of <425 micron Carbon Back® Biochar on its way to one of our fertiliser clients.
