How green hydrogen could fuel a sustainable economy

In recent years, green hydrogen has emerged as a transformative energy solution, gaining momentum as a vital component in the global transition towards sustainable and carbon-neutral economies. Derived from renewable sources through a process called electrolysis, green hydrogen presents a clean and versatile energy carrier with the potential to revolutionise multiple sectors, including transportation, industry, and power generation.

The remarkable growth and adoption of green hydrogen can be attributed to its versatility and environmental credentials. Unlike grey hydrogen, which is produced from fossil fuels and emits significant carbon emissions, and blue hydrogen, which utilises carbon capture and storage (CCS) to reduce emissions, green hydrogen is generated by electrolysing water using electricity from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power.

Hive’s green hydrogen strategy

Hive Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Hive Energy, is working on six green hydrogen/ammonia developments across the globe. Our three core projects are in South Africa, Spain, and Chile. Our Coega project, in South Africa, was launched in December 2021 and the team is quickly progressing the solar farms for the site, as well as the ongoing development for the green ammonia hub. Following closely is our Albamed site in Spain that we launched in early 2023. The Albamed project will support Spain’s ambitious RES goals once operational by 2030.
