Hive Energy Canada & New Zealand

New Zealand has set a goal to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2030.
The country currently produces 84% of its power from renewable sources, however, New Zealand is still importing coal and oil from outside the country.
In terms of renewable energy, New Zealand is a leader in the sector and was the second country to implement geothermal energy for hydrogen production. Due to the volcanic and tectonic features, the country is perfectly suited for generating geothermal power. As well as the country’s development in geo technology, the first hydroelectric power plant in the Southern Hemisphere was built in the country in 1885.
In late 2023, HES Aotearoa (HESA), a joint venture formed by Hive Energy, Ethical Power, and Solar South West, announced a nine solar farm development partnership with leading solar energy generation company, Lodestone Energy. Once constructed, the HESA sites will represent more than 500 GWh in additional solar generation for Aotearoa.

Canada is committed to their transition to a low-emission economy.
The goal across the country is to reach 90% zero-emitting power sources by 2030. The goal is close for Canada, as they are already functioning on 80% non-emitting sources. As well as focusing on increasing renewable energy usage, Canada is reducing reliance on the coal industry altogether.
Canada is a leading country in renewable energy and is a world leader in hydroelectricity, with around 60% of its energy being generated from moving water.
While hydroelectricity is valuable in Canada, it has been slow to adopt solar power. More than 25% of all Canada’s solar farms were installed in 2022, which demonstrates how quickly the country is ramping up its PV capacity in order to meet its 2030 goals.

Hive began its journey in Canada & New Zealand in early 2022.
With the dedication Canada & New Zealand have to their green energy improvements, Hive’s expansion to the countries was timely.
While both regions are new for Hive, we have expanded on our ‘tried and tested’ strategy that has proven particularly successful in the UK and Spain. Our expert team has been working on developing the projects in Canada and New Zealand to Ready-to-Build status.
Hive is working as part of HES Aotearoa in New Zealand – which is a partnership between Hive, Ethical Power, and Solar South West.
The HESA team has completed two deals in New Zealand since we began operating in the country. The first deal was in late 2021 and the remainder of our New Zealand portfolio was part of a substantial agreement completed over summer 2023.
